The Sholing Press was founded in 1976 by the present owner John Paynter in a rented premises in South East Road, Sholing, Southampton. He started in business with an old second-hand printing press. He had previously served an apprenticeship in print at the Ordnance Survey office in Southampton, followed by various managerial posts, culminating as Works Manager with the British Printing Corporation at a large book printers in Chichester. After a couple of years at the old premises, the company moved to a freehold premises at Portsmouth Road, Sholing and have been there for the past thirty-four years.
In 2002 the company acquired Printsigns, a sign and vehicle graphic company trading in Woolston and in 2006 acquired Cluett Burns, a printers and stationers from Hedge End, Southampton who had been trading for fifty-four years and whose owner wanted to retire. With the combination of the three companies this enables the company to supply top quality printing, stationery, signs and vehicle graphics using the latest state of the art equipment. The company has amongst its clients, Marks & Spencer, Barclays Bank, Tesco, Amey Construction and Coopervision. The company consists of family members and existing staff, totaling seventeen.
